How often is too often to bathe a pet?

The frequency of bathing a pet is somewhat of a loaded question, because, like humans, every pet has a unique chemistry, ie. Horses, cats, dogs,etc.. So, the answer is broken up into two trains of thought: 1) when the pup develops a not so fresh smell  which can vary from time to time; and 2) the basic routine schedule of a bath time.

The not so fresh smell setting can vary based on a number of factors such as; time of year, humidity, temperature, weather the animal is a house pet or outside animal; the outside environment, how often the animal is groomed with a brush or comb, etc& With these circumstances the bathing amount is subjective to the owners. When the owner notices a smell, the pet gets a bath. This can be a good idea, because the animal will have a good amount of oil built up to keep their skin soft and not flaky. However, the downside is that the pet could have an overextended period of non-bathing, which could result in matting of the hair. At this point the animal needs to be clipped or a have good de-matting solution applied.

The second practice of a scheduled bath time should not exceed more that once per week. The marvelous coats of todays show animals are shampooed generally bathed about every week. This endorses the idea that shampooing once per week is sufficient. Most quality grooming pet shampoos and cr?me rinses, or conditioners have adapted ph levels to ensure that frequent bathing will not dry the animals skin excessively. So, if you are going to proceed with the scheduled bathing, always use a pet grooming shampoo or some owners prefer a medicated dog shampoo if their pet has dry or itchy skin. The point here is to use a professional pet groomer product type of shampoo, because applying human shampoos on pets can cause skin problems Also, consult your vet or professional groomer, they can make specific recommendations depending on the length of coat and breed.

One last note, make bath time a bonding time for you and your four legged-friend. Its always a good idea to associate that bathing time with something good such as a treat. This positive reinforcement will make bath time a fun time and you wont have to battle your way when bathing them.
